A Mockingbird's Song
If
you could assign one song to be the "theme song" of To Kill a Mockingbird at this point in the novel, what would
that song be, and why would you select it? Explain how the mood and/or lyrics of the song would appropriately capture the theme, mood, or main ideas of the story.
I would choose "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson because Atticus is always telling Scout and Jem that they need to consider other peoples feelings and needs. He always wants them to do the right thing. The lyrics explain that if we want our world to change, we have to make a change to our self so we can make a difference in the world. If individual people change, it is possible for society to change all together, but we have to work with others to make a difference. It is possible for us to change society, but many people can be racist and prejudice, so that makes it a lot harder.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick a theme song for this book, I would pick "Imagine" by John Lennon. I selected this song because blacks are treated badly and Tom Robinson could get charged with a crime he didn't commit just because he is black. In this song it says "imagine all people living life in peace," which means everyone getting along no matter their skin color. The lyrics to this song show what needs to happen, which is treating people equally.
ReplyDeleteWhen picking a theme song for To kill a Mocking Bird I would choose the song "Glory" by John Lennon . When choosing a song this one was a very good option I thought. It talks about the equal rights between races and how we need to fight to the finish. One line in the song says " Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle". This song i feel is a very good match cause of the specific details that it talks about not only just about society it also brings up famous people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to assign a song to be the theme song for the book I would pick "The Hanging Tree" by James Newton Howard. I would pick this song to be the theme song because of the story in the song, the song is about a dead man in the hanging tree asking if his lover will meet him at the tree. I think this song is similar to the story, it is about a man on trial for something that he did not do and he could die because of a false accusation, I feel like if the story keeps progressing they way it has Tom might end up just like the man in the tree did. I think as of where I am in the story Tom is a walking dead man, most of the people in the book want him dead and I think the song represents a dead man talking just like Tom.

ReplyDeleteAfter having read the book To Kill a Mockingbird and discovering the outcome, a song that comes to my mind is The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. Although this song has a different story line than the book, I see some similarities between them. In this song a man, who the singer calls "brother", is convicted for killing another man named Andy. "Brother" didn't actually kill Andy but the Sheriff didn't look at the evidence. "Brother" dies when he was innocent. I connect this part of the song to Tom Robinson and how he was innocent too.
Another song that reminds me of this book is I Won't Let Go by the Rascal Flatts. In this song someone is telling another person that no matter what, they will be there for them. This is relatable to how Atticus feels about his kids. It says that they will always be there to help them when they need it and that they will never be alone.
If I could pick one song to represent the theme of "To kill a Mocking Bird" I'd pick the song "Waiting on the World to Change" by John Mayer. This represents the theme of the book because Atticus is waiting for the society in Maycomb to change. Atticus is fighting for blacks to be treated equally. In the song it says, "It is hard to beat the system when we are standing at a distance." I think this describes Scout, Jem, and Dill very well. They are waiting for Atticus to win the court case but can't help him fight because they are too young, so for now they are waiting on the world to change. That line could also fit with the people in the society that are too scared to stand up for what they believe, so they are watching Atticus do all the work.
ReplyDeleteI think that a song that fits the theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is "you're crashing, but you're no wave" by Fall Out Boy. I selected this song because it talks about a man hanging and that is a good representation of the court case and Tom Robinson. It also talks about how the jury isn't punished for condemning someone to death. It also mentions how both sides have people grieving over the outcome.

ReplyDeleteI think the song that best describes this book is Black or White by Michael Jackson. I choose this song because it resembles Tom Robinson and the way he is judged because of the color of his skin. In the trial it was clearly pointed out that there was no possible way that he could have committed the crime but because he is an African American he was still imprisoned. In the song, Black or White many of the lyrics are about how people shouldn't be judged by the color of there skin. One line that really sticks out to me was "I'm not going to spend the rest of my life being a color" I think that line is very powerful and is a good way to resemble the book and Tom Robinson's case.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the song "The Times They Are A-Changin" by Bob Dylan would be a good match for the book's theme. The reason I would pick this song is due to the meaning of the song, and how it correlates with the book. The song is about how the world around us is always changing, mostly about changing of views on life and how the world is run. The song was made and released around the time of the Civil Rights Movement, so one of the main focuses of the song is about how the laws that segregate black and white will be abolished. It also goes on to say that you better change with the times or you'll be left behind. This shares a lot of meaning with the book. During the court case the jury takes a long time, showing that the case was controversial, that the people are starting to see things different even if it starts small.
ReplyDeleteFor a theme song for this book i would choose "God Your Momma and Me" this represents the book because in the song they talk about how God is there for them and Atticus is there for Tom Robinson when he defends him in the court case. Also this song is in a way religious and helpful and the book is also religious because they talk about going to church. Scout and Jem are also looked after by Boo Radley in a way and theyre looked after by Calpurnia in which the song
ReplyDeleteGod his mom and the singer are there to protect them.
If I were to pick a song to fit in with the theme of To Kill a Mockingbird it would be, "Where is the Love" by The Black Eyed Peas. This song talks about children learning from the environment that they live in with all different types of justice and groups. It talks about people loving the drama and in To Kill a Mockingbird it is a small town so everyone knows what's going on and they all love town gossip. Another way it could be related to the book would be how it talks about discriminating other races and in the book it's known to blame blacks for rapes and crimes. They want to keep the African Americans totally separate because of how racism has been taught.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to choose a song to represent the theme of "To Kill a Mocking Bird" I'd pick the song "One of the Boys" by Katy Perry. I would choose this song because it reminds me of Scout's character and how she is very tom-boyish as described in the book. In the song it says "I saw a spider, I didn't scream, 'Cause I can belch the alphabet, Just double dog dare me. I chose guitar over ballet. I tape these suckers down 'Cause they just get in my way." Then in the middle of the song its says "So over the summer something changed, I started to reading Seventeen, and shaving my legs." This reminds me of how Aunt Alexandra wants to come, and make Scout more feminine.

A song I think relates to tis book is "Walk a Mile" by Elvis Presley. This song relates to this book because when Elvis says "Walk a mile in my shoes// Yeah, before you abuse, criticize and accuse" it is basically the advice that Atticus gave Scout earlier in this book. When he says this he is meaning that he wants you to know his life and live through it before you ever judge him for his lifestyle. Atticus teaches Scout this because she wants to judge someone before she knows what they're going through.

ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick a theme song I would pick "stand by you" by Rachel Platten. I would pick this song because in the song it is saying that no matter what she is going to stand by you and that is what Atticus is doing no matter what he will fight for Tom and will try his best to make him not guilty. Also Atticus is always there for his kids and will always be for them even when they have an argument. Also like no matter how you feel most people in this book our there for each other and kinda some times have each others back. This is why I think this would be a good theme song for "To kill a mockingbird",
If I could pick one song for this book I would pick Common, John Legend - Glory. It is about everyone having the same rights, so black people and white people are the same. Like this part is from the song Facin' the league of justice, his power was the people
ReplyDeleteEnemy is lethal, a king became regal
Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle
The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful. It is about everyone to have peace and that will be the glory est day that everyone will become equal
If i were to pick a song that best describes "To Kill a Mockingbird" it would be "When You Were Gone," by Avril Lavigne for many reasons. In the song it represents how much some might need a significant other when they were gone. In the book i personally think that Scout is very upset about there mother and she should be more girly if her mother was there. Scout is a tomboy at heart and takes after her dad, but of her mom was there i think that she would have grown up to be a little nice lady. Calpurnia might disagree with me because she thinks she is the representation of the mother, but a girl always needs her mother.
ReplyDeleteI think the song that best describes To kill a Mocking bird is the song Black or White by Michael Jackson. I choose this song because it describes Tom Robinson and the way he is discriminated by his color. During court he was shown not guilty but was still sent to prison. in the song i chose the lyrics talk about not wanting to be a dark skin tone. That is why i think this song is a good way to resemble the book.
